Synonymizer Help

Essay writing tool

Synonymizer is a software that replaces synonyms for words occurring in a text.

Writers can use it to enrich their texts, to improve their writing style and enlarge their vocabulary. Website promoters can use it to generate new text for their pages in a fast and easy way. Students can use it to produce essays that are not easily identified with previous works.

Its main features are:

- Establish Word Frequency in any text. This helps solve excess repetition and misspellings.

- Introduce new synonyms, for those words that are not found in its Freeware Synonym DataBase of 1,270 words or in its Upgraded Synonym DataBase of 113.970 words.

- Identify those frequent words that do not have a synonym.

- Generate many combined phrases using synonyms of its components.

As in any word processor, the File option lets you create New files, Open, Save and Print.

As in any word processor, the Edit option lets you Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, Redo, Find, Find Next and Replace.

It signals which words are used more frequently, suggests alternatives (synonym words or phrases) and replaces as desired.

Toolbar and Status Bar are options that show/hide these elements.

The Options menu leads to two main functions of Synonymizer: The Synonym Database maintenance, and Generate Contents.

Synonym Database maintenance:

The File Open and Save As functions allow the user to work with different synonym databases. It can be the one that loads by default and comes by default with the Shareware version, with 1,270 common English words, or any other.

What are the advantages of working with different synonym databases? Those users with low-memory PCs will notice that using the large synonym database that comes with the Registered Version (113.970 words) slows down the synonymizing process. This effect is proportional to the size of the source text, as you can see in the Speed comparison page. For this reason, sometimes it is better to work with small, specific databases, rather than the whole dictionary.

The other options related with Synonym Database Maintenance are related to individual words. The user can edit, add or delete synonyms to the database. When the 100% column is used, it means that the synonym is completely equivalent to the source word. When the 80% column is used, it means that the synonym is close, but not equivalent, to the source word. When the 60% column is used, it means that the synonym is not quite related to the source word. When the user decides to synonymize, the 100% command is a stringent operation will take only the 100% equivalences. The 80% command is an intermediate operation that will use both 100 and 80% equivalences, and the 60% command is a non-stringent operation and will take all three equivalences: 100, 80 and 60%. In this way, the user has control over the synonymization process.

Generate Contents

This option was designed with the Gateway page Generation process in mind, especially for those using our Great Gateway Generator product. A set of Gateway Pages needs lots of relevant content, in order to be spidered by the Search Engines and be considered relevant and highly rankeable. Our Generate Content process involves randomization of paragraphs (using the dot as phrase separator) and use of synonyms. The Options menu lets you define the number and location of the generated files.

If you choose to export the contents to a GGG project, you need to define the location of the .mdb file that keeps the GGG project, usually in the GGG installation directory.

Phrase Generator

This module takes words and combines them in phrases, respecting a logical order.

For instance, lets write some phrases for a politician speech:

phrase generator

The result contains the 54 possible phrases that combine the 7 given cells.

Notice that a cell can contain more than one word. A little math shows us that 54 is the result of 1 x 3 x 1 x 3 x 1 x 2 x 3, this is, the number of rows in column #1, times the rows in column # 2, until the end. A small message will appear in your screen to predict the number of generated phrases. More than 1000 phrases can take a rather long time, depending on your PC speed and memory.

You can also insert a "Blank" word, using a space. For instance:

The / nice / apple / is / hopefuly / ripe.
The / (blank) / apple / is / (blank) / red
The / small / banana / will be / (blank) / green

Adjectives and adverbs can be optional in the generated phrases.

There is also a couple of new features.

1) Currently, the "Fill with Synonyms" feature in the Generator is limited to combined 100-80-60% similarity synonyms. We can discriminate the 3 options, and also add a limit to the number of words provided. In this way, you will be able to add several synonyms at 60% similarity, and use them for generation of large numbers of phrases. And you will always have the chance of being more selective.

2) Every word can be ticked for Yes or No. You can choose the 2 options of a noun (phrase subject) and of a verb, for singular and plural, and tick first the singulars, generate phrases, then tick the plurals, and generate again.

The shareware version allows short phrases (4 columns), while the registered version allows all 10 columns.

This feature is very useful to help creativity, to fill pages with content that looks human-made, and to produce lots of keyword phrases for AdWords campaigns.

For those who are not familiar with the PayPerClick system of Google ads, lets say that advertisers choose keywords, and prepare short ads that Google (and other search engines running the same system) publish to the right of the main, free results. Choosing a lot of relevant keyword phrases is very important for the success of the ad campaign.

Saving - Opening files

The small icons on top let you save a combination of words in the 10 columns, for repeated phrase generation. The files are saved with the .pgf extension, meaning "phrase generator file".

We recommend generating more phrases than needed, and then selecting the amount that will be used.

The SUBSET feature was designed to select non-continuous phrases, for maximal variation.

See the Phrase Generator Example Page for a graphical view of this powerful feature that lets you easily generate 20,000 phrases in 5 minutes.

Paragraph Generator

The Paragraph Generator allows you to use several .pgf files together and mix the phrases, to increase variation. See Phrase Generator

Word Frequency

Analyzes the input text and establishes the Word Frequency list, ordering the words from high frequency occurrence to low. This feature is very useful to improve the richness/quality of any text. Only after finishing the essay or other writing we realize how poor our vocabulary tends to be, and how often we use the same words.

It is also very good for catching misspellings. Let's say you wrote: "Rumpleskitkin" several times in your text. Last names are never included in spelling checkers. Only after running Word Frequency you realize that you used several wrong spellings:

word frequency

From Word Frequency you can select any word and add a synonym in the database.

This option also informs the Total and Unique Word Count and the Unique Word Ratio:

unique word count and ratio

Texts with Unique Word Ratio of 0.80 or less are considered poor.

There are 4 options:

By Step

This is very similar to the Search-Replace feature in MS Word and other word processors. It is slow and delicate. It presents each word, and provides several options: Skip, Skip All, Add Synonym.

To add a new word to the database, first Search for it. If it is not found, you can add it in the 100, 80 or 60% similarity column. Starting in version 4.0, you can include a 2 or 3-word phrase in the main list, and a word or phrase as the equivalent synonym.

If the word already has a synonym in the database, you can select the given synonym with your mouse, and two new options will be activated: Replace and Replace All.

This command replaces all exact (100% similarity) synonyms for all the occurrences of the word.

This command replaces all the 100% and 80% synonyms for all the occurrences of the word.

This command replaces all the 100%, 80% and 60% synonyms for all the occurrences of the word.

After Synonymization, a report is presented: Starting Time, Ending Time, Replacements (source and target word list), Total Words, Replaced Words, Replaced Percentage.

All the Synonymize functions mark in red those words that were replaced, in order to show which text segments still need synonymizing. If you do not want those "Plagiarism Detector" tools to tag your text as too similar to another one, you should make sure that your "Replaced Percentage" is high, and that red words are evenly distributed in your synonymized text.

Words without Synonym

As its name says, this option provides the list of all the words in the text that do not have a synonym in the database. Since they are ordered by frequency of occurrence in the text, is easy to start from the top, provide a synonym, and continue until the main words in the text are synonymized.

Of course, for those users who register the software, the large synonym dictionary provided with the upgrade makes things much easier.

Synonymizer calculates 3 indexes on a text:

Average word length

Letter count.

Automated Readability Index

ARI = 4.71*chars/wds+0.5*wds/sentences-21.43

Coleman-Liau Readability Index

Coleman-Liau = 5.89*chars/wds-0.3*sentences/(100*wds)-15.8

Simple English uses short words. Academic or technical English tends to use more Latin-derived words.

If your text has a very low index, it could be to childish or simple-worded. You can synonymize it in order to improve it. If your text has a very high index, consider using shorter words.

For the Spanish-speaking users, there is a Spanish synonym dictionnary. Use the Actions - Select language option to select the Spanish dictionnary. It is usually mailed to those buyers who request it. It is named synonyms-spa.mdb. Remember to go back to English when you are done with Spanish. Because of the different Spanish grammar, automatic replacement makes more mistakes than in English. The only word variation currently recognized is Plural. There is still no provision to modify gender or verb forms other than -s endings.

Generate Contents

This process involves randomization of paragraphs (using the dot as phrase separator) and use of synonyms. The generated files respond to the parameters established in the View - Options - Generate Contents menu. The variations are exported in a simple text format, or in a database format compatible with GGG. Doorway pages have contents and structure designed for top ranking in Google and other search engines, usually optimized for every possible keyword that can describe a website or webpage.

Limitations of the Shareware version:
